Wendy R. Brewster BRIDGES Accelerator Research Grants
Craig Reynolds generously sponsored this Foundation for Women's Cancer award in honor of Wendy Brewster, MD, PhD. Dr. Brewster was a leader in gynecologic oncology, and the 56th elected President of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology, whose research focused on early detection, prevention, cancer care equity, and advancing strategies to improve patient outcomes. In addition to her exceptional scholarly work, Dr. Brewster was committed to developing the next generation of clinician-scientists and was recognized for her innovation and excellence in mentoring, serving as a role model, advocate, and sponsor for countless residents, fellows, and faculty. A former trainee described her as someone who “saw potential in individuals and fostered success even when we hadn’t seen it in ourselves. She believed in us, challenged us to be better, and encouraged us to have the confidence to face challenges.” In keeping with Dr. Brewster’s commitment to supporting early career investigators, and her support for the SGO/GOG-F BRIDGES Research Initiative, this award was developed to amplify the impact of clinical trials led by BRIDGES scholars.
The Wendy R. Brewster BRIDGES Accelerator Grant is intended to amplify the impact of BRIDGES research protocols. As such, funds can be used to support:
- Preclinical studies to provide additional support for a proposed clinical trial. For example, confirming that a particular agent demonstrates activity in models of the specific tumor type being targeted, tissue-based studies to prioritize tissue-based endpoints, or preclinical toxicity studies to inform dose selection for a first-in-human trial.
- Pilot studies to optimize a study instrument such as validation of a survey in a target population, or funding for translation of patient-facing materials to overcome hurdles to trial participation.
- Outreach initiatives to ensure planned protocols address the priorities of a particular patient cohort, including the development of community advisory boards, engagement of patient advocates, or other innovations to align research goals with community needs.
- The integration of correlative studies in a proposed clinical trial to confirm on-target effects or identify novel biomarkers that will inform planned phase II/III trials.
- The multisite expansion of a proposed trial through collaboration with other BRIDGES scholars
- Real-world study data can inform trial design and improve the relevance and applicability of research outcomes to everyday clinical settings.
- Other initiatives to accelerate the launch or expand the impact of proposed clinical trials.
Eligibility:
Current and former SGO/GOG-F BRIDGES Scholars developing an interventional clinical trial under the mentorship of BRIDGES faculty mentors are eligible to apply.
Application components:
- Two-page letter of intent to include:
- A summary of the BRIDGES trial proposal, including the rationale, study design, target cohort, and expected timeline.
- A description of the proposed plans for the Accelerator Research Grant, specifically how the funds will multiply the impact of the proposed BRIDGES concept.
- A statistical plan for proposed studies, if applicable.
- A letter of support from an institutional or BRIDGES program supervisor or mentor.
- A detailed budget.
Rules:
- Two grants of up to $25,000 each will be awarded to SGO/GOG-F BRIDGES Scholars.
- Funds must be used within 12 months of receipt.
- Funds may be used to cover the costs of proposed assays, services, study participation incentives, FTE for study staff, or faculty travel.
- Use for faculty salary costs or indirect costs is not allowed.
